Bio

Matheus Souza (b. 1997) is a Brazilian composer, improviser, and electronic musician based in Lyon, France. Working across electroacoustic, experimental, and improvised music, his practice centers on live electronics, combining composition and performance. His work often unfolds through collaborations with visual artists, dancers, and musicians from diverse fields, including jazz, contemporary, and electronic music.

In 2023, he received a commission from Modulisme to create an electronic work as part of the Buchlaism series, celebrating 50 years of the Buchla Music Easel and the origins of the Buchla 100. That same year, he independently released his debut album Terra, a 34-minute solo work in two parts, composed, performed, and recorded in single takes on the Buchla 200e system at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The album highlights his approach to modular synthesis, merging detailed sound design with dynamic improvisation to create immersive, evolving sound environments.

In 2024, he undertook a residency at Erica Synths headquarters in Riga, Latvia, where he explored interactions between Buchla and Eurorack systems, concluding with a performance of the prototype of his work Diode at Erica Synths Garage. Later that year, he performed Tekoha at the SILPAKORN International Music Festival and Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

In June 2025, he was in residence at GRAME CNCM, further developing his research on hybrid analog-digital systems using a Buchla/Eurorack, computer, and TX802 setup. His solo performance Thresholds premiered on April 22, 2026 at Bac à Traille – Théâtre de la Renaissance.

Matheus holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Performance and Composition (CoPeCo) from the CNSMD de Lyon and a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from the Villa-Lobos Institute (UNIRIO). He is currently pursuing a DNSPM in Contemporary Composition at CNSMD de Lyon under the guidance of François Roux.
